make-vs-force
Discrimination: make vs. force
Boundary Overview
The Rule: Both verbs are "causative" (they cause someone else to do something), but they differ heavily in intensity, grammar, and resistance.
- Use make for general authority, rules, or causing natural emotional reactions. Grammatically, it is followed by a base verb without "to".
- Use force when there is active, often physical, resistance being overcome. It implies strong coercion or violence. Grammatically, it is followed by "to + verb".
