Discrimination: look vs. see vs. watch

Boundary Overview

The Rule: These three verbs describe how we use our eyes, but they are divided by intention and duration.

See is passive and effortless. It means an image naturally comes into your eyes, even if you aren't trying.
Look is active and intentional. It means you deliberately point your eyes in a specific direction (usually a static object).
Watch is active and sustained. It means you look at something continuously over a period of time, usually because it is moving or changing.

The Rule: If you are trying to find or focus on something, use look (almost always followed by "at"). If something just enters your field of vision without effort, use see.
See Collocations: see a bird in the sky, see a doctor, can you see it?
Look Collocations: look at the map, look at me, look closely.
Common Error: ❌ I looked a bird flying past -> ✅ I saw a bird flying past.

The Rule: If the object is still, we look at it. If the object is moving, developing, or performing over time, we watch it.
Look Collocations: look at a photograph, look at a painting, look at the menu.
Watch Collocations: watch a football game, watch the kids play, watch TV.
Common Error: ❌ I like to look at the television -> ✅ I like to watch television.

The Rule: There is a specific boundary regarding screens and performances. When we go out to a public venue (like a cinema or theater), we use see. When we are at home looking at a screen, we use watch.
See Collocations: see a movie (at the cinema), see a band live, see a play.
Watch Collocations: watch a movie (on Netflix), watch a video on YouTube.
Common Error: ❌ I watched a great movie at the theater last night -> ✅ I saw a great movie at the theater last night.
