Grammar A1 - Subject Pronouns

This video explains how to use subject pronouns and pluralize nouns in English.

• Subject Pronouns: These are used as shortcuts to avoid repeating names in conversation. They function as the "stars" of a sentence by identifying who or what is performing an action.

  • Singular Pronouns:
    • "I" is used for oneself and always pairs with "am".
    • "You" is used when speaking directly to someone and pairs with "are".
    • "He" (for a male), "she" (for a female), and "it" (for an object or animal) are used for single subjects and pair with "is".
  • Plural Pronouns:
    • "We" is used for a group that includes oneself.
    • "They" is used when referring to a group of other people or things.
    • Both "we" and "they" pair with the verb "are".
  • Grammar Tip: You can test the accuracy of a sentence by mentally swapping a specific noun (like "Maria") for the corresponding pronoun (like "she").

• Pluralizing Nouns:

  • To make most singular nouns plural (meaning more than one), add the letter "s" to the end.
  • If a word ends in a hissing sound, such as "s," "x," "ch," or "sh," add "es" to the end instead. This adds a syllable, making the plural form easier to pronounce.
